The German battleship Bismarck, considered one of the most powerful warships of its time, was sunk by the British Royal Navy on May 27, 1941, after a lengthy pursuit following a battle where it damaged the British battlecruiser HMS Hood; crippled by torpedo hits and heavy shelling, the Bismarck was ultimately unable to maneuver and was finished off by torpedoes from the British cruiser HMS Dorsetshire, with only a small number of the crew surviving the sinking.
