Flower of the Month
In December 2025, I was trying to boost sales on DeviantArt without compromising my Jewish identity by giving in to the Christmas bug. Instead of making traditional holiday imagery, I decided to experiment with themed flowerscapes. Poinsettias are obvious for the season, but I challenged myself to approach them deliberately out of context, using non-traditional recolors in fantasy palettes and epic, enchanted settings that stripped away Christmas coding entirely. Then Andy, my Kiwi partner, suggested I also do pōhutukawa, a tree that blooms in December and carries its own deep seasonal meaning in Aotearoa. I loved the idea, so I created fantasy recolors for those as well, letting both flowers exist on their own terms.
I enjoyed the process far more than I expected. When we left DeviantArt on January 2nd, 2026, I decided to keep the themed flowerscapes going as a monthly ritual: two flowers each month, usually fantasy recolors, and occasionally staying true to their natural colors when that feels right, as with cherry blossoms.
Each flower becomes a small world. I enjoy exploring different landscapes, moods, lighting, and emotional tones so the same bloom never feels repeated. I find this work deeply relaxing, almost meditative, and I love watching these imagined environments slowly come to life. Flower of the Month is about attention, curiosity, and quiet joy, and about letting beauty unfold without rushing it.
