A Song of Passion and Flame

In the Air Tonight

“In the Air Tonight” has always hit me harder than most songs. It’s not just the stormy atmosphere or the legendary drum break — it’s that haunted tension, the quiet that swells until it cracks wide open. When I listen, I hear more than Phil Collins wrestling with betrayal; I hear the echo of my own years caught in the undertow of silence, where hurt was hidden in plain sight and every grin felt like a pack of lies.

I lived seven years in California with someone who left me small, afraid, and waiting for a storm that never seemed to end. The way the song builds — hushed, ominous, inevitable — became the soundtrack to that chapter. And when it finally breaks open, when the drums crash like lightning across the sky, it felt like my own escape. Every beat was a footstep toward freedom, every thunderclap the sound of leaving behind a cage I should never have been in.

This piece is my retelling of “In the Air Tonight” as a personal myth: a journey through storms, up mountains, into lightning, and out the other side.

And I want to close with gratitude — to my partner Andy, who makes me feel safe in ways I once thought impossible, and who has proven himself more than worthy of my trust.

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? Oh Lord, oh Lord

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before, my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well, I remember, I remember, don't worry
How could I ever forget?
It's the first time
The last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up
No, you don't fool me
Well, the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight
